Two more vignettes from this side

———

A little girl steps onto the subway to ride home alone for the very first time. She wears a disheveled school uniform, and an old man gives her his dark blue priority seat. She pulls a Rubik’s cube out of her backpack and inspects it. Minutes pass as the train goes from stop to stop. She solves it, and looks it over one last time before realizing the train is at her stop. She leaps up and dashes out just as the door begins to close.

I step out the door of my house. An old woman asks me to get out of the way and presses the intercom button on the wall. After a moment, a voice breaks through the static. The two have a long conversation in Taiwanese as I walk down the street.

Honestly this post is kind of a stinker, but I’m on a seven day streak and didn’t have time to write anything else.
